Charcoal skin care

Activated charcoal is a type of carbon. It is obtained after treatment with oxygen. This treatment opens up millions of tiny pores. As a result the surface area of the activated carbon is increased. Which makes it highly adsorbent. Activated charcoal is used in skin care because of this ability.

Being highly adsorbent, activated charcoal has the ability to absorb impurities and toxins from the skin. Therefore you will find it as an ingredient in many face masks, cleansers and scrubs. When used it can attract and absorb impurities like dirt, oil and bacteria from the surface of the skin.

This will clean your skin and refresh it. It can also unclog pores, reduce acne and blackheads and also balance the production of oil in your skin.

Activated charcoal skin care

We have for you a DIY facial mask and a DIY facial scrub. By using our scrub and face mask you can save dollars that you would have to spend on buying them.

Here is a simple recipe for a DIY activated charcoal face mask. For this mask you will need 1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder, 1 teaspoon bentonite clay, 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar and a few drops of your favourite essential oil.

Take a small bowl and mix the activated charcoal and bentonite clay together. To this add the apple cider vinegar and stir until a paste is formed. If you find that the mixture is thick then you can add water to thin it out. As far as essential oil is concerned it is optional and you can add it only if you desire to do so.

Cleanse your face and apply the mixture. Avoid the eye area. Let the mask dry for 15 minutes. Finally rinse your face off with warm water and pat dry.

Activated charcoal has some beneficial properties for the skin. But, it can be abrasive and drying. Therefore don’t use the mask for than 2 times a week. Also moisturize your skin afterwards to prevent dryness.

Also as with any new skin care product it is good to test the mask on a small area of the skin, before applying it on the face. If there is no irritation or redness then don’t use it on your face.

Now let us move on to our DIY activated charcoal scrub. For this scrub you need ¼ cup of coconut oil, ½ cup of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of activated charcoal powder.

Take a bowl and combine the coconut oil, granulated sugar and activated charcoal powder. Mix the ingredients till they are combined properly. Keep this mixture in a jar with lid.

To use this scrub, you need to first wet your face. Then apply the scrub in circular motions, by using gentle pressure. Avoid the eye area. Rinse off the scrub with warm water and pat your skin dry. You can store the remaining scrub in a cool dry place for future use.

Like the mask avoid using the scrub for more than 2 times a week. Also moisturize the skin afterwards to prevent dryness. Also you have to test it on a small area of the skin like the mask.

In conclusion

Activated charcoal has adsorbent properties that can help to remove dirt, excess oil, impurities and toxins from the skin. You can use our DIY face mask and DIY scrub to benefit from the positive effects of activated charcoal.
