It is important for men to have healthy skin. This can prevent problems like wrinkles, treat acne and reduce uneven skin tone. There are many other benefits of healthy skin. The best way to improve your skin health is to have a proper skincare routine. Apart from skincare, a healthy diet can also enhance the health of your skin.

Certain types of foods that are rich in anti-oxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and certain minerals and vitamins are known to give men a healthier complexion. Certain types of foods can also harm the skin. A proper diet that is rich in foods which are good for the skin and avoiding bad foods is important for skin health.

Foods to eat for skin health

To improve skin health, you will need to eat foods that are rich in anti-oxidants. These neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that cause skin aging. Free radicals cause wrinkles and are responsible for hyperpigmentation. Therefore it is important to eat foods that are rich in anti-oxidants.

Berries like blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are packed with antioxidants. Oranges, grapefruits and lemons are rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant.  Leafy greens like spinach and kale and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are also rich in antioxidants. Finally, include tomatoes and carrots in your diet.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also beneficial for your skin as they maintain the skin’s lipid barrier, which retains moisture in the skin. They can also reduce skin inflammation and promote collagen production.

Fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseeds and walnuts also contain a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids.

Eat hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelons, celery and green tea to improve skin health.

Finally you need to eat lean protein to improve collagen and elastin levels in the skin. These two prevent formation of wrinkles. Chicken and turkey are good options. If you are vegan then include tofu and legumes in your diet.

Foods to avoid for skin health

Avoid sugary and processed foods as they can lead to inflammation. They can also damage collagen and elastin and cause premature aging. Avoid candies, cookies, pastries, fast foods, frozen desserts and sweet cereals. These all are bad for the skin.

Sugary drinks like soda and excessive fruit juices can cause blood sugar spikes. This can lead to inflammation and acne. They can also dehydrate your skin as you skip drinking water.

Excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine also damages skin health. They both, can dehydrate the skin. Alcohol also can cause facial redness. So drink both the drinks in moderation.

Use salt in moderation. The sodium in salt can cause water retention. This can lead to puffiness and swelling in the face.

Avoiding the above mentioned foods is crucial to maintain your skin health.

Skincare is an important for skin health. But a lot depends upon the foods you eat. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, hydrating foods and lean proteins is very important.

Also, avoiding sugary foods and sodas is crucial. Intake of coffee, alcohol and salt should be in moderation to protect the skin.
