We all get influenced by celebrities and fashion icons. The rising popularity of beards among men can be attributed to this trend.

A beard symbolizes traits like wisdom, masculinity or religious devotion in different societies. With a beard, various styles are available to suit personal preferences and facial features.  Also, the ease of maintenance of a beard with modern grooming products and techniques has contributed to their popularity.

When you have a beard it becomes important to have a proper skincare routine. The purpose of this blog post is to address all the problems faced by men with a beard. The post will also come up with a skincare routine for men with beards.

Differences between skin with or without beard

Skin with a beard tends to be thicker due to the presence of hair follicles. Hence, it is more resilient. But bearded skin is also oilier. Clean-shaven skin is smoother, which makes it easier to apply skincare products. But clean shaven skin is more prone to razor burns. These are the main differences between skin with or without a beard.

Problems men with beard face

A common problem that bearded men face is itchiness. It is more common during the early stages of beard growth. Another problem is beard dandruff, which is a flaky, itchy condition that can be embarrassing.

Ingrown hairs, which occur when beard hair curls back into the skin instead of growing outwards. They cause red bumps and are painful. Facial hair can contribute to acne, by trapping oil, dirt and bacteria leading to breakouts.

Some men experience uneven beard growth. There are patches of thinner or sparser hair. Then, you can have split ends and tangles. Finally, beard can trap odor from food and smoke, which can result in bad smell.

Due to the above problems bearded men need to have a specialized skincare routine.

Cleansing

It is important to choose your cleanser or beard shampoo according to your skin type.  Look for ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, tea tree oil, and shea butter. These are natural and gentle ingredients that are not harsh or drying.

There are shampoos that are beard specific. They offer better conditioning for the beard. Also check for reviews online before buying any shampoo.

Wet your beard with lukewarm water. Take a small amount of the shampoo and lather it in your hands. Massage the shampoo on your hair and into your skin below. Concentrate on the chin and jawline as these are places with excess dirt and oil.

Rinse your beard. Don’t leave traces of shampoo as it can be drying for the skin. Pat your beard dry with a gentle towel.

You will need to shampoo your beard daily if you spend time outdoors. Otherwise, shampoo your beard every other day. Also, if your beard is short then don’t shampoo often.

Exfoliation for men with beard

Exfoliation, is important in beard care. It removes dead skin cells, unclogs hair follicles and prevents ingrown hairs. It reduces the risk of irritation and acne.

For exfoliation use a soft beard brush or a silicone facial scrubber. Gently scrub your beard area in circular motions. You can do this form of exfoliation for 2 to 3 times a week.

You can also use a beard-specific exfoliating product containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid. Apply it, once a week. Over exfoliation can lead to irritation.

Moisturizing the beard

It is important to moisturize the skin beneath the beard. This step can prevent dryness, itching and flakiness. Hydration also promotes beard growth as the underlying skin is free from irritation.

Look for natural ingredients like jojoba oil, shea butter, aloe vera or argan oil. For shorter beards use lightweight moisturizers. For longer beards consider balms. Apply the product daily or as advised.

Beard oil and conditioner

Beard oil can moisturize your skin and soothe irritated skin. It promotes healthy beard growth and shines your beard. It can reduce beard itch, beard dandruff and promote blood circulation. A beard conditioner offers the same benefits as beard oil.

Cleanse your beard. Apply a small amount of conditioner or oil on your beard and massage gently. Leave it on as there is no need to wash. You can also use a beard comb to ensure proper distribution.

Combing and grooming the beard

You need to comb your beard to prevent knots and tangles. A combed beard helps maintain a well-groomed appearance. It improves blood circulation and exfoliates the face.

You can use a beard brush or a beard comb to groom your beard. Be gentle and detangle any knots.

Sun protection for men with beards

For men with a beard it is important to choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic sunscreen to avoid clogging beard follicles. In general it is important to use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Some beard oils have an SPF and can provide additional protection.

How to deal with beard problems?

To address the problem of beard itchiness wash it regularly with a gentle beard shampoo. Use a beard conditioner to soften the hair and a moisturizer for the skin underneath. Also avoid scratching.

For beard dandruff, exfoliate using a brush or a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells. Apply anti-dandruff shampoo.

In conclusion

You need to incorporate a proper skincare routine to prevent beard problems like irritation and beard dandruff. Cleansing with shampoo, exfoliation, moisturizing and using conditioner or beard oil are some of the steps in grooming a beard.
